FIRST TIME AWARDS ENTRANT

As a first-time entrant in the Epson State Awards, welcome! To help guide you as you begin your AIPP Awards journey, please consider the following:

MEMBERSHIP STATUS, ENTRY NUMBERS & FEES

You need to consider how you will be entering the Awards, dictated by your Membership Status. AIPP Accredited, AIPP Members, AIPP Students and non-members enter the Epson State Awards. Non-members are welcome to enter the Awards if they are professional photographers or student photographers at an approved tertiary institution.

Your Membership Status will dictate how many images you can enter into the Epson State Awards.

AIPP Accredited: can enter up to 12 images, with a maximum of four images per category.
AIPP Member: can enter up to 9 images, with a maximum of three images per category.
AIPP Student: can enter 3 images in total.
Non-Members: can enter up to 4 images in total.
Non-Member Students: can enter up to 3 images in total.

Your Membership Status and how many prints you choose to enter also dictate your entry fee. Entry fees are published in the AIPP Epson State Awards Rules or are available online here.

THE CATEGORIES & RULES 2020

You will need to decide which category / categories you wish to enter.

The 2020 Categories are:

Commercial
Documentary
Family
Illustrative
Landscape
Nature
Newborn
Pet / Animal
Portrait
Travel
Wedding

Each category is awarded a winner. The overall winner is chosen from these category winners and named the Professional Photographer of the Year for each State.

A General Member Photographer of the Year and a Student Photographer of the Year are awarded. Members and Students cannot win categories.

All winners receive a trophy, framed certificate and a cash prize.

The 2020 AIPP Epson State Awards Rules contain general information about the Awards and specific information about each category’s rules. Thoroughly reading and understanding the rules is an important part of the entry process and all entrants are encouraged to take the time to read and understand the rules each year before entering. Start reading HERE.

PRINTING

The Epson State Awards are a PRINT awards which means you will be required to print and mount your images. You will also be required to provide digital files of your images as a part of the entry process. You can print your images yourself or you can organise and pay for printing services. If you are not intending to print your images yourself, we suggest you investigate the turnaround time for the printing & mounting of images with your local printer or lab.  This will help you prepare your timeline to make sure you have enough time to enter. Read about the size and presentation requirements for your image and mount in the 2020 AIPP Epson State Awards Rules by clicking here. Please note that your mat can be any colour you wish. The majority of entrants generally choose to mat in off-white, with grey and black being other popular colours.

To help ‘newbies’ we have compiled a list of recommend printers in each State. This list will be published shortly.

PRINT CASES

In order to enter your prints into the State Awards, you will require an official AIPP Print Case. These cases are designed to safely transport your prints via the post or courier to the Awards. You will only need to purchase one print case as they are hardy and last for decades if looked after properly.

Print cases can be purchased from the AIPP website here or you can call the AIPP Admin Team on 1300 885 334 to order one. Your print case will be shipped from Melbourne and can take up to two weeks to arrive so please buy your case early. Print cases cost $135 + postage.

Please note that students DO NOT need to purchase an official AIPP Print Case. In most cases student work will be sent to the Awards by your tertiary institution in a specially designed print case. If your Institution does not have a print case or you are the only student entering from your institution, you may send your prints into the Awards securely wrapped and packaged.

A handy tip: you do NOT need to include bubble wrap or extra packing tape on your print case. They are designed for travel and will safely transport your prints just by correctly using the straps on the case. Trust us!

INVESTMENT - INCLUDING PRINT CASES

It is important to understand the investment required to enter the Epson State Awards. The Awards entry fee, your main investment, is dependent upon your Membership Status and the number of images you decide to enter. You need to factor in the cost of printing and mounting ALL images that you enter. You are required to purchase the official AIPP print case to be used to send in your physical prints (unless you are a student: see above).

IMPORTANT DATES

Make sure you carefully check important dates for your Epson State Awards, available HERE by clicking on your relevant State. These will generally be the Entries Open, Entries Close, Print Cases Due and Judging Dates, as well as your state’s Presentation Night. When entering the Epson State Awards you are encouraged to submit your entry as soon as possible after Entries Open. The website experiences an extremely high traffic rate on the Entries Close date which can result in delays that could see you missing out.

Your physical prints in their official print case must be received by the Print Cases Due date. Information on where to send your prints is available here by clicking on your relevant state.

Judging is run over two days or three days and is free for the public to attend…if you can be there, it’s a wonderful atmosphere to experience first-hand. The judging process is interesting and educational and it’s a great place to meet fellow photographers. You may also consider volunteering ‘Back of House’ so you get a chance to see and work with the prints up close – contact your local State Council if you wish to put your hand up to volunteer, which is an amazing way to experience the awards for the first time.

All category winners, special award winners and the State Professional Photographer of the Year will be announced at your state’s Presentation Night.
